Celebrating their 34th title last season, Juventus enter the 2018/19 with strong hopes that they will make it 35. Winning the title 7 years in a row, Juventus are the team to beat in Serie A if any other club hopes to win the coveted title. The obvious reason to back Juventus to make it 8 in a row is the talismanic Cristiano Ronaldo, joining after being convinced that his time at Madrid was over and seeking a new challenge. This, coupled with the current squad knowing exactly what it takes to go the season, will mean any team will have their work cut out in order to stop the inevitable 35th title. Emre Can have also joined from Liverpool in order to add some much-needed depth and versatility, alongside the return of the evergreen centre-back Leonardo Bonucci. An underrated acquisition, albeit at the expense of promising up and comer Mattia Caldara, Juventus go into the season looking at their strongest.
Serie A winners odds – 8/13
Napoli goes into the new season bitterly disappointed that their 91 point tally wasn’t enough to secure their first title since 1990. Due to their successes, this prompted Chelsea to acquire two important figures for the Naples based club with Maurizio Sarri leaving for England, taking play-making midfielder Jorginho with him to London. This left a noticeable hole, filled impressively with journeyman manager Carlo Ancellotti. Carlo will be pleased that last years squad has not lost too many other key players, keeping Lorenzo Insigne and Kouilbaly so important for any future success. Last season Napoli took advantage of other Serie A sides not living up to expectations so do not expect them to match the successes of last year.
Serie A winners odds – 8/1
One of two clubs which reside in Italy’s capital, Roma similarly to Napoli enjoyed successes last season on the back of others sub-par performances. The highlight of Roma’s campaign was an incredible semi-final appearance in the Champions League, beating Barcelona on the way. However, two important players in enigmatic Belgian Radja Nainggolan switching to Inter Milan and Brazil’s number one Allison transferring to Roma’s Champions League conquerors Liverpool has weakened Roma. Losing two key players is hard on any club although they have added several signings, most notably Javier Pastore from PSG and youngster Justin Kluivert from Ajax. Steven N’Zonzi is the latest to have signed after helping France become World Champions. Expect a repeat of last seasons league performance from Roma.
Serie A winners odds – 9/1
After a few turbulent years, Inter Milan will be hoping that they can repeat successes from 2005 – 2010 to claim their 18th Scudetto. Ambitious signings made this summer will have manager Luciano Spaletti hoping they can build on last seasons 4 place, with the aforementioned Radja Nainggolan acquired to add some much-needed bite in the middle. Stefan De Vrij from the other Rome based club Lazio is the other shrewd signing from a league rival alongside Kwadwo Asamoah from Juventus both on frees. There’s a lot of work that Inter will need to do if they wish to replicate past successes, but this season will be another building block on the road to rehabilitation.
Serie A winners odds – 10/1
AC Milan spent last summer making a series of impressive signings in order to reclaim their status as the biggest team in Italy. However, players such as Andre Silva failed to live up to their hefty price tag and the club finished in 6th place way off the rest of the pace. Replacing one ex-player with another ex-player last November went some way in stopping the slide, Gennaro Gattuso coming in to steady the ship. AC Milan has had another productive transfer window this season, swapping the disappointing Leonardo Bonucci for Mattia Caldara who is tipped for a bright future. The big signing is Gonzalo Higuain on loan with an option to buy from Juventus, someone who knows where the net is and has had success in the past in this league with both Napoli and Juventus. If he can hit the ground running, Milan could be a real outside tip for league winners with a generous price across the board.
