World Cup Preview – Thursday

DENMARK vs AUSTRALIA

Group C – 1pm BST – Samara

LAST TIME OUT

Denmark – A good win for Denmark in their opening game against Peru, who before the tournament were their most likely rivals for 2nd place. Poulsen hit the winner in the 59th minute to seal a 1-0 victory.

Australia – The Aussies had an awful sporting day on Saturday, losing in the football, rugby and cricket. They will feel hard done by as it looked like they would gain a point against France until a late deflected Pogba winner gained a 2-1 win for France.

LIKELY LINE UPS

Denmark – (4-2-3-1) Schmeichel; Dalsgaard, Kjaer, Christensen, Strygar-Larsen; Kvist, Delaney; Poulsen, Eriksen, Braithwaite; Jorgensen

Australia – (4-4-2) Ryan; Risdon, Sainsbury, Milligan, Belhich; Leckie, Jedinak, Mooy, Kruse; Rogic, Nabbout

PREDICTIONS
I think this will be another tight game for both teams. Denmark could qualify with a win here and Australia will most likely be out if they lose so its massive for both sides. Eriksen could be key here. Denmark 1-0 Australia

TIPS

Under 2.5 goals – 8/13

Eriksen first goalscorer – 11/2

Eriksen to score from outside the area – 9/2

FRANCE vs PERU

Group C – 4pm BST– Ekaterinburg

LAST TIME OUT

France – In their 2-1 victory over Australia, the main talking points were technology. France were awarded a penalty after a VAR review after the referee originally allowing play to continue. Then, with 10 minutes left, Paul Pogba’s deflected shot was deemed to have crossed the line thanks to goal line technology.

Peru – Peru will be bitterly disappointed to have lost against Denmark 1-0. The South Americans were very wasteful not scoring with any of their 17 shots. Expect top scorer Guerrero to return to the starting line up here in a must win.

LIKELY LINE UPS

France – (4-3-3) Lloris; Sidibe, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez; Matuidi, Kante, Pogba; Griezmann, Mbappe, Dembele

Peru – (4-2-3-1) Ballon; Advincula, Ramos, Rodriguez, Trauco; Tapia, Yotun; Carrillo, Cueva, Flores; Guerrero

PREDICTIONS

Peru are not a bad side and probably should’ve got at least a draw against Denmark. France will be expected to win, and I think they will scrape it, but it will not be easy. France 2-1 Peru.

TIPS

Griezmann to score first and France to either win 2-1 or 3-1 – 20/1

France 2-1 – 8/1

Guerrero to score anytime – 7/2

ARGENTINA vs CROATIA

Group D – 7pm BST – Novgorod

LAST TIME OUT

Argentina – In a fascinating game against Iceland, Argentina could only manage a 1-1 draw against a side they would’ve expected to beat. Lionel Messi missed a late penalty on a miserable day for him and his side.

Croatia – Luka Modric and his side would’ve been happy with their first game, beating Nigeria 2-0. Modric himself stepped up to score a penalty which secured victory and top spot for Croatia.

LIKELY LINE UPS

Argentina – (4-2-3-1) Caballero; Salvio, Otamendi, Rojo, Tagliafico; Mascherano, Biglia; Di Maria, Messi, Meza; Aguero

Croatia – (4-3-3) Subasic; Vrsaljko, Lovren, Vida, Strinic; Rakitic, Modric, Kovacic; Perisic, Madzukic, Rebic

PREDICTIONS

Really looking forward to this one, and not just because I have Croatia in my sweepstake. There will be some great talent on show and both teams have the ability to create a great game here. Argentina will be favourites, but I can see a draw here. Argentina 2-2 Croatia

TIPS

2-2 – 16/1

Perisic to score first and Croatia 2-2 – 135/1

Over 2.5 goals – 6/5

– Robert Shiers
